Trauma-Informed Therapy

If you have experienced trauma, you may be asking yourself if mindfulness and therapy that includes body exploration is right for you. The short answer is yes, and here is why.

One of the ways that you go about your daily business is that you avoid allowing trauma-related memories and sensations from surfacing. This works well, until it doesn’t, and then you re-experience overwhelm or have symptoms in other parts of your life.

Because the brain processes trauma in our fight/flight centers, it bypasses most of our higher-level brain functions like language and rational thought. This is why simply talking it out or making a “rational decision” to change responses to triggers is very difficult.

Unlike our newly evolved neocortex, the language of the body is primitive and non-verbal. This provides access to the language of trauma. In fact, trauma is largely stored in the body. Accessing it is a slow and steady process that is preceded by establishing safety, strengthening inner resources, and developing skills. We take each step with intention and always stay within your window of tolerance.
